The Lost Thing

My mate posted this up on my facebook. Its a reindition of the Short story, The Lost Thing, by Shaun Tan. Usually 9 times of of ten, a remake is never as good as the original, but its interesting to note how these two completely different mediums can portay a story is such a simular way. The pace of the story, the art direction, its so similar. It really is the books equivalent. No surprises to hear that it was co directed by the auther and illustrator of the book, Shaun Tan.

Its got such a great message, as all Shaun Tan short stories do. Check out more of Tan's work at

Here's a pic from 'Rabbits'. A story relaying ideas of colonisation in Australia. Its an amazing childrens book (that really isnt a childrens book) with some truely stunning paintings within it. Its worth getting out from your library.

Finding the right look for the comic

When it comes to illustrating a comic. I figure you have to be really comfortable and confident with your style. Aesthetically, it needs to be consistant. And you can only keep consistency if the visuals tick all the right boxes. For me, it needs to be quick to produce and support the overall tone or theme of the comic. Personally, I have decided to produce the System Earth comic in Photoshop using a Wacom Tablet. I have found a digital brush that really suits my inking process and I think I'm gonna stick with it. Its a different story when it comes to the colouring side of it. I'm going for a gritty textured look because I think it suits this style of inking. Also, its an interesting look. But yeah, I think the colouring still leaves something to be desired. Also, I should have varied the weight of the ink line. It would have emphasized the lightsource and the shadows a lot more.

System Earth Poster

I've been working on this image for a couple of days. Its a promo poster showing off Toni Fletcher and her giant teddy robot, Mr. Cuddles. I wanted Toni to kind of look like a sci fi pin up girl. I'm real stoked with the font. I got a bunch from issue 71 of imaginefx magazine along with heaps of digital illustrating tutorials. That cd had over 20 hours of tutorials - its worth checking out if your interested in digital art. I'll be doing a tutorial on this image in the near future so keep an eye out on my tutorials section!
